This sacred bathing ritual marks the appearance day of the Lord of the Universe. It is a rare and deeply spiritual opportunity to glimpse Mahaprabhu in His majestic Gaja Vesha (Elephant Attire) before He retires to the Anasara Ghara for a fortnight.
Come, let us immerse ourselves in the nectar of Hari Naam Sankirtan and seek the boundless mercy of the Lord.

What is DevaSnana Purnima?
DevaSnana Purnima — the Snana Yatra — falls on the full-moon day of the month of Jyeshtha and is revered as the appearance day, the very “birthday”, of Lord Jagannath. It is the first great public festival of the Jagannath calendar.
On this most auspicious day, Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra and Devi Subhadra are brought from the sanctum to the Snana Bedi (the bathing altar) and ceremonially bathed with 108 pitchers of fragrant, sanctified water — purified with sandalwood, turmeric, camphor, herbs and flowers. Sanctioned in the Skanda Purana, it is the only day the Lords are bathed in open public view.
The Divine Gaja Vesha
After the grand bath, the Lords are adorned in the breathtaking Gaja Vesha — the Elephant Attire — in which Jagannath and Balabhadra appear as the elephant-headed Lord Ganesha. This majestic form is revealed only once a year, on Snana Purnima.
It is said that a great devotee, a worshipper of Ganesha, longed to behold his beloved deity within Lord Jagannath. To honour his pure devotion, the merciful Lord appeared before him in the Hati Besha — the form of Ganesha. Since that day, the Lords don the elephant attire on this sacred evening — a rare vision that fills the heart with wonder.
The Mystery of Anasara
After being bathed with so much water, the Lords are believed to fall lovingly “unwell” with a fever — and like a beloved member of a family, they retire to the Anasara Ghara, a secluded healing chamber, for a fortnight. During these fifteen days the deities disappear from public darshan and are nursed back to health.
This deeply human leela — the Lord of the Universe falling ill, being tenderly cared for, and recovering — reveals His infinite intimacy and compassion. The Lords then reappear in radiant, youthful splendour for the Nava Yauvana and Netrotsava, before the world beholds Him once more.
Why You Should Attend
This is the last darshan of the Lord before He enters His fortnight of seclusion — and the only chance this year to behold the magnificent Gaja Vesha. To stand before Mahaprabhu on His appearance day, to bathe in the nectar of Hari Naam Sankirtan, and to receive His blessed Mahaprasad is a rare and life-transforming blessing.
